Route
Â
Starting in the valley of AxarquĂa near VĂ©lez-MĂĄlaga, you ride along the coast along towns like Torrox Costa and Nerja. Once past Nerja, the fun (and climbing) commences. By then youâll already have done 30km.
Â
The first major challenge of the route is the ascent up the Carretera de la Cabra.
Known for its winding roads and majestic views, this climb is as demanding as it is rewarding.
The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys unfold before you, providing ample motivation to keep pushing forward on this long day in the saddle.

The climb is about 25 km long and summits at the junction towards Jayena, Arenas del Rey, and the pittoresque Embalse de los Bermejales. 100 km done, 70 km still to go.
Â
For the next 50km, youâll be riding on a plateau at the southern part of the Granada province. The snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada loom large and provides an epic backdrop to this eerily quiet and peaceful part of the world. A couple of sleepy villages fly by on the undulating route. The charming town of Alhama de Granada is also on route. Nestled in the heart of the mountains, Alhama de Granada is a gem that boasts rich history and stunning architecture. You might want to come back another day by car to explore this beautiful town.
Â
As you leave Alhama de Granada, prepare yourself for the exhilarating descent through the Boquete de Zafarraya. This iconic pass offers a thrilling ride down winding roads with breathtaking views. The descent is fast and exciting, with the cool mountain air rushing past you as you navigate each curve with precision.
Â
The route doesnât end there. After descending from Boquete de Zafarraya, the journey continues through the busy valley of AxarquĂa. Itâs mostly downhill, but there are just enough bumps up to make your tired legs work overtime.
Fueling up
At the top of the Carretera de la Cabra, there is a restaurant where you can have a drink or consume a hearty meal. Arenas del Rey and Alhama de Granada also are decently sized towns with a few cafes, or if youâre in a hurry you can stop at a petrol station.
Tips
This is a long day in the saddle. Come well-prepared and make sure to bring spare kits, layers of clothing, a GPX track on your bike computer.
